I've had a few requests to share this post which was a popular one over in our Facebook community - please do take a read as this lesson is just as important as learning actual colouring techniques if you want to improve. So please grab a cuppa, take a read, then let me know your thoughts in the comments below
<3
When sharing your photos, or even just assessing how you are going with your colouring, it's really important to be aware of the type of comments you use. How we speak to ourselves and about our work directly influences our confidence, motivation, and determination - which in turn will affect whether you succeed or fail at learning this skill. 90% of learning comes down to attitude - not talent, not skill, not how much you know. Even though you might not realise, negatively speaking about your work is not constructive and this leads to feeling "not enough" or like nothing you do is perfect - like we shouldn't bother continuing because we are never going to get it.
Learning how to speak about your work isn't about always being overly positive to the point of inauthenticity either - but it's about taking the negative out and instead focusong more on being constructive. Your openness to being a beginner, to accepting that mistakes are part of the learning process, and that perfection is not the aim of taking any class or doing any colouring practice will determine your ability to keep going, to keep reaching for new challenges, and therefore new achievements. So I wanted to do a writeup here on how to change, or atleast be aware, of how we speak to ourselves so we can gradually implement some of these strategies in our lives, to help remove some of the pressure and judgement we place on ourselves. Often when we feel pressure, we seek to change the activity, thinking it's too hard so we won't bother, but instead it's important to seek to change ourselves and our attitudes toward these challenges. The only failure you can have is the times you give up on yourself before you've even allowed yourself to grow - so let's change our way of thinking for a better, more confident, more open you

STEPS TO HEALTHILY CRITIQUING YOUR WORK
🎉STEP 1 - CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE
So let's talk about how we critique our work, which is usually first done when we assess our work ourselves. Firstly, it's important not to judge a half finished technique - it's always going to look a little wrong or stand out to you until your entire piece is finished. Resist that urge to keep restarting - it's not doing you any favours in learning and progressing with your colouring. If you are really unsure though, pop a message and photo over to me privately so we can chat about the next steps. Secondly comes how we speak about our work. When you've finished your colouring, or viewing during the process, change your perspective so you aren't looking in that upclose mode we use for colouring, 20 cm from our work. This is not how art is meant to be viewed. Hold your colouring at arms length, prop against a wall and take an actual step back - try to view the whole picture rather than just looking upclose for mistakes and errors. Try to change your eye to see the whole thing like as if you were viewing a friend's colouring - don't point out to yourself the areas to work on. Changing our perspective to appreciate our work as a whole allows you to have a greater understanding of how techniques come together to create a finished piece, and allows little mistakes that no one is looking at, fade into the background.
🎉STEP 2 - POSITIVE TALK FIRST
The wording we use when we first look at our work is very important. Firstly we need to take the time to point out what we've done *right* - it's a step that is missed so often but it is crucial in critique, confidence, and motivation. I guarantee on every single colouring there is a lot of good that deserves celebrating. Try pointing out two things you feel you've done well or improved upon from last time - it shows you that you are learning and achieving each time you colour. When you share your colouring online, consider sharing these two things and notice how people's opinion of your work changes - we celebrate your achievements with you, but we look for mistakes if you point them out
:) It's so much more empowering to acknowledge the growth you are having with every piece, and a piece doesn't need to be perfect for there to have been a good lesson involved.
🎉STEP 3 - HOW TO HANDLE MISTAKES
Then we come to the areas we don't love - but we need to face these constructively instead of negatively - eg. Instead of "I messed up the wings", "my fine lines are a mess", or "it's not perfect but...." try something like "next time I'm going to work on xxx to achieve xxx result". So this may read something like: I "next time I'm going to work on leaving more gaps between my strokes to emphasise texture". Notice that you've taken away that negative emotion so you haven't done anything "wrong"- but you are still learning on your colouring journey (as we all do). A lot of people say they learn best from critique - but as you can see, there's a difference between saying something is not good enough and just reminding yourself that it's all a learning journey with no reason to place pressure on. Critiques should be done privately or with myself as part of your free private tutoring with your classes, as you are keeping these growth lessons your personal achievements. Remember aswell, many times we don't know what we may tweak to get a better result, and this is why it's so crucial to ask for help here instead of just thinking it's wrong or putting aside in frustration - use the help that is freely available for you so we can work on these steps together until you feel more confident yourself to see and understand.

🎉STEP 4 - MAKE THIS PART OF YOUR ROUTINE
If you struggle with perfectionism or low confidence, try using a journal to record these steps so you can make this a part of your learning process. It will also help you log your colouring progress, helping you to easily flick back and see over time how you have progressed, which can be a very empowering thing to remind yourself that it's just a journey and you don't have to learn it all in a day to be worthwhile doing. actually get in the habhings to work on, and also those positives from Step 2 if All of a sudden you have taken what you felt was a negative attempt at colouring and made it a positive step forward - showing you that every single time you colour you are improving and learning and it is important to have these challenges to learn from. CONCLUSION
I hope this may help some of you to assess the way you speak to yourself about your work. Don't let fear of mistakes stand in your way of learning - that inner critic is wrong when it says you aren't good enough. Tell it right back that you are and that you are just learning - you are a journey of growth, and you don't need to learn it all or be a pro in one day, one lesson, 10 lessons, 50 lessons. Achievements in life require you to take challenges - embrace and seek these challenges, and take them bravely and without any pressures or expectations, knowing you are growing not just in your colouring but in all areas of life and you are a person every single time you try
<3 You don't ever have to be great to start, but you do have to start, and continue, to be great
<3 Happy colouring x

"Focus on progress rather than perfection and on how far you’ve come rather than how far you have left to go. One of the biggest causes of self-loathing is the hell-bent need to 'get it right.' We strive for perfection and success, and when we fall short, we feel less than and worthless. What we don’t seem to realize is that working toward our goals and being willing to put ourselves out there are accomplishments within themselves, regardless of how many times we fail.Instead of berating yourself for messing up and stumbling backward, give yourself a pat on the back for trying, making progress, and coming as far as you have."
I think this is something we can all struggle with, and it's important to remember no matter what it is you are trying to learn in life, that we don't learn by being perfect. Needing perfection can stop us from taking that next step, can make us feel we are failing because we aren't reaching the high standard we have set for ourselves. We need to remember that we learn by being brave, by making mistakes, and knowing it's ok because they mean we have just stepped forward.
A mistake is a lesson - when you feel frustration rise up, stop yourself, say what it is, and think about what you've learned by making it and how it is helped you grow. If you do this every time you make a mistake then you have succeeded - it is growth and learning that is important, not perfection. We also learn by asking for help. We learn by allowing ourselves to start, even when we feel scared or overwhelmed. We learn by accepting ourselves for where we are right now, and knowing that is exactly where we need to be today.
This week give yourself the chance to learn by remembering these things and jumping in, not because the colouring is necessarily the most important, but because *you* are

Hi everyone! Hope you are having a colourful week. I was so excited this week to be able to head back to the QLD Cancer Council Lodges to teach some free art and colouring classes to some of the people undergoing cancer treatment. I took in a simplified version of our brand new Taking Flight Class, featuring this beautiful image from Power Poppy, so we could make some coloured candles. As the butterfly is a symbol of hope, regeneration, and restoration, I thought this would be the perfect project that they could display in their rooms during their stay at the lodges.
My favourite part about doing these workshops is that no one has ever coloured before, and at the start of the class everyone is feeling a little nervous and unsure if they can create something. Then, once we get started, it gives them a chance to take their mind off what they are going through, to just take that mental break to recharge, and before they know it they've created something they can be really proud of. It shows if we just give ourselves a chance to try new things without pressure, then we are more capable than we think. I am a little limited on photos I can take due to privacy, but here is a few samples that were created - didn't they do a fabulous job!
If you want to learn to create your own coloured candle, we have a class in our Mini Class Bundle 2 here.
The next time you are feeling nervous to jump in, I hope you will think back to this post and know that if you just give yourself the chance to try then you can start on your journey to learning more. As these wonderful people will tell you, life is too short to hold yourself back and say "I can't" - the worst that can ever happen by having a go is you make a mistake, learn from it, and grow that little bit more for tomorrow. The only time you can ever fail is the time you don't start as that's the one time you can't improve.
I want to say a big thank you to our class members - your support is what has enabled us to do these free workshops for the hospitals - thank you! Just by being brave and giving yourself that chance to do something special for you, you are giving us that chance to help others aswell and I can’t thank you enough ❤️

Hi everyone! Hope you are having a colourful week and have been taking some mindful time just for you to destress and clear your mind. If it's been a busy week, make sure you schedule in just 15 minutes for you over the weekend to have a guilt-free time out - you deserve it.
This week, I have a mini art lesson for you to help you learn some real art fundamentals behind what you are colouring. On the stamp above from Jade Dragonne, I’ve used just one colour blend (5 markers) to help show you that you don’t need a full collection of markers or pencils to start learning more about colouring ❤️
When we use only one blend on an image, we are employing the art fundamentals of working with colour VALUES to help each part of the image have depth and stand out from the rest. I’ve put together a mini beginners art lesson here on what value is. and how to employ this in your colouring projects.
What is the VALUE of a colour?
When we work with just one colour blend on an image, it's important to show that each object is different so they don't all end up being the exact same colour, so we will end up doing some lighter objects and some darker objects. This is called playing with the VALUE of the colour blend. Value is how light or dark a colour is. So when doing, say, Sepia or Monochromatic tones, you want high value coloured objects (lighter) vs low value coloured objects (darker) of the same blend so you have contrast in the image and everything doesn’t look the same. Take for example, the image I've coloured here - even though I've used the exact same colours on each part of the image, we can clearly see her skin is a higher value than the hair, communicating to our eye that the skin is a lighter colour overall than the hair is, and creating contrast between the two objects so we can clearly define them.
How can we adjust the colour value?
So once you understand what value is, you can implement this in your colouring by adjusting how much, or little, of the lighter vs. darker colours are used in a blend. An increase in how much of the darker colours are used in the blend will make the overall value appear lower (darker), whereas an increase in the amount of the lighter colours used will make the colour blend appear higher in value (lighter). Have a practice - using one colour blend, colour up an object and use equal amounts of each colour to get a neutral blend. Then, try the image again, but increase the amount of the darker colours, while decreasing the lighter colours, to lower the value. Then, do another practice increasing the lighter colours and decreasing the darker to raise the value. Now you can adjust the value of one single colour blend simply by adjusting the amount of each colour used!
Why is learning these fundamentals important?
It’s helping you to understand why we colour the way we do; to communicate that objects have form and are three dimensional, to show texture, depth, and materiality. It stops you from just guessing but actually understanding why you are doing each step with your colouring. Many people can fall into a bit of a trap thinking just following along will help you learn, but the old saying of "you don't know what you don't know" really comes into play here - art has real fundamentals and theories that make up it's foundations and learning and understanding them will really help you take the next steps, whether you are a beginner or more advanced. When you do a class at Kit and Clowder you aren't just following along like a youtube how-to video; you are learning real art fundamentals and the background theories like this that help you colour any image at all. This is a big difference between doing an actual class and just a colour along, to really help you grow and understand technique.
Ready to learn more? If you'd like to learn more about colouring with me and see some videos of these techniques, check out our classes at www.kitandclowder.com (freebies on the homepage!). If you'd like to try colouring this image with me, she's from our Sepia Colouring Lesson in our Mini Class Bundle 1, and you can take a close peek below! The lesson also comes with full pencil instructions aswell.
I hope you've enjoyed this mini art lesson - I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments and whether you'd like more posts like this! Have a colourful weekend and remember to take a time out just for you - you deserve it x
