Colouring Tip: Finishing is Just as Important as Starting!

art therapy Wednesday, May 13, 2020

Making a start is the number one thing you need to do to improve your colouring (after all, you can't improve upon nothing, right?), but then this right here is my second most important tip. When learning a new technique it's important to remember just that... that we are learning

The first time you try a new technique is going to be your worst attempt because you don't have practice or experience behind you. It's really important that we don't judge our first attempts - this includes your class work. Try not to go into a class thinking it needs to be a perfect finished project - classes are experiment time, troubleshooting, play time, practice time. A class should be about just learning new things, pushing yourself to be challenged, and embracing the mistakes that come along with this - see the lessons that they are teaching you. If you remember that learning is not about perfection but about growth then you can release any pressure and focus on the lesson not the project.

Too often I see people put colouring aside or give up when something is hard or they feel they've made a mistake. When we give ourselves permission to stop listening to the voice saying it's not good enough and just finish the colouring, we then have an opportunity to step back, and assess and appreciate the lessons behind what we've created. When we colour, we colour "up close" - and really scrutinise all the details and areas we don't love, however that's not how colouring is meant to be viewed. Consider Monet's impressionist work - upclose it is just blobs of paint on a canvas, but with space you see the bigger picture.

Giving ourselves some perspective by stepping back and seeing the picture as a whole helps to give the techniques some context - allows our eye to "see" what we are communicating. What was once a glaringly obvious mistake forms part of the bigger picture. And with any mistakes, the absolute worst case scenario is you've learned more about technique and how to tweak it for the result you want in the future. Make learning about the lessons, not about perfection. So even when you feel unsure, keep going and reserve critique until you can assess the picture as a whole, and even then make sure to celebrate each step on your journey, regardless of the finished result - as long as you are trying, you are growing

Want tips on your colouring? Our classes always come with free one on one private tutoring aswell so you can get real tips on how to grow your colouring (this is *not* done in our group here but instead done privately so we can chat one on one about tips personal to your work). **If you want to learn more, why not try out a free class this week over at www.kitandclowder.com - pictured classes here are the Mermaid Pencils Class and the Tropic Paradise Markers Class

Don't be Afraid of Colouring

art therapy Friday, April 14, 2017

Do you ever think that an image or a lesson looks too hard for you? Or have you tried something and found it was tricky, so put it aside? This is fear of failure talking and today I want to look at ways to move past this so you can have the most enjoyment with your colouring :)

We all want to learn more about colouring right? So why do we allow ourselves not to join in when it is something we want to do? First things first, you aren't alone in feeling this way. Most of us feel nervous to try new things (even me too!) - that is totally normal as we are moving outside of our comfort zones. But it's what you do next that takes you from being on the outside just looking, to being someone who is growing and always improving in their colouring.

The most important step to overcoming fear of failure is to take action.

Don't ever wait for the perfect moment as it may not be coming... just jump in, even if you feel nervous. When you feel that self-doubt creeping in, acknowledge it, feel it, then tell it "not today" because you have some colouring to do :) Setting goals can really help aswell - aim not for perfection but for learning something new... this way, if we are joining in, we can never fail as we are always moving forward. A mistake never equals backwards.. it equals learning opportunities which helps us go forward.

If you have put off a lesson because you felt like you weren't good enough, I want you to know you *can* do this and I'm right here by your side to help. When it feels scary or it isn't working, don't just put it aside, hop on facebook, open your private messages, and send me one. I'm here to help you so that you can progress on your colouring journey and feel the most confident - so please make sure you use the help that is available :)

I hope you will make some time this weekend to try something you have been putting off - we are all here cheering you on. Don't forget to check out our free Markers 101 class if you haven't yet, and I'd love to see you in our other classes aswell over at www.kitandclowder.com

Taking a Class Even When You Don't Have Time

art therapy Monday, March 20, 2017

Hi everyone! I wanted to do a post today about why it can be a good idea to do a class when you have a lot going on right now. I see a lot of people mention that they would absolutely love to do their classes and learn more, but Sometimes we can put off creative things when we have a lot of stress going on. Today let's talk about why it can actually be a good thing to do a class when there is a lot going on around you, even though you may not feel you have the time.

1 - Focus

It gives you something to focus on with your whole attention, allowing you a few moments distraction from some of the more overwhelming things going on for you right now. Having goals to work toward can help to give a bit more order back to your life when things feel chaotic.

2 - Achievement

It gives you something to achieve - when we feel very overwhelmed or even not confident or good enough in areas of our life, a creative class can help you to achieve something to be proud of. Just remember though that mistakes are part of the achievements so don't allow yourself to get frustrated at these.

3 - Support

There is support available - sometimes we can get hard on ourselves and take out our emotions at other things by putting down our creative work. Our classes always come with support - our Technique Classes have a personalised feedback section - please use this! I love to work together with you to help you feel more confident so you aren't doing this alone.

4 - Creativity and Sharing

It gives you a creative outlet to express yourself and a supportive place to share - there is something freeing about being able to express your emotion through art. Just the process of being able to create can help to reset your mind. One of the best things about our hobby is sharing our progress - it is such a wonderful feeling to see someone 'Like' your work or leave a supportive comment to let you know that your work meant something to them. This can also be a great thing for your confidence and to feel a part of a community when some aspects of life seem tough <3 Make sure you always pop up your colouring in our Facebook Group or Instagram, even if you have a niggling of self doubt as it is such a great way to start to feel more confident.

I hope this might inspire you today to put aside even just 10 minutes out of the 10,000 minutes in this week to do a little class colouring. :) If you have been putting off doing a lesson or jumping in for any reason, I hope you will be inspired to learn more this week to keep growing in your hobby - you have the power to make that choice just for you.. and all of the information and support you need in your classes to keep progressing. Make that decision to keep going just for you :) Please feel free to contact me any time if you want to chat about your colouring or even if you just want someone to chat with. Happy colouring!
